FAQs

WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga is a 5000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India.  Its practices were recorded by a scholar and teacher named Patanjali, in the Yoga Sutras.

The most important teaching of yoga deals with our nature as human beings.  It states that our true nature goes far beyond the limits of the human mind and personality; that our human potential is infinite and transcends our individual minds and our sense of self.

IS YOGA A RELIGION?

It is important to note that although yoga originated in India, it does not contradict or interfere with any religion, and may be practiced by anyone in any part of the world, regardless of faith, race, creed or culture. In fact, yoga with its powerful techniques for creating a sense of inner peace, harmony and clarity of mind is absolutely relevant to the modern world – both East and West.

IS YOGA WHAT I SEE ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

Like many profound and powerful arts and sciences – yoga has suffered from the spiritual poverty of the modern world.  It has become trivialized, watered-down and reduced to clichés.  The deep and eternal essence of yoga has been misrepresented and packaged for personal profit by clever people.  At the hands of some, yoga has been reduced to the status of just another exercise program available on videotape.  A haze of confusion has been created around the pure and clear concept of yoga.  Through my teachings I hope to clarify the true meaning and purpose of yoga.

WHO CAN DO YOGA?

Anyone who can "breathe" can do yoga.  My classes are inclusive and accessible to all.

I'VE NEVER DONE YOGA BEFORE, WHERE DO I BEGIN?

Show up and everything else will follow.  First yoga classes can be intimidating, but once you've crossed that hurdle, it gets better.  Like most things in life, the more you do something, the better you get at it. Don't be afraid to be a beginner. My yoga classes are a non-judgemental, safe space for you to grow at your own pace with me guiding you along the way.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO PRACTICE YOGA?

The only piece of equipment you "need" to practice yoga is a yoga mat.  I recommend investing in an eco polyurethane (rubber) mat from the start as it is thick, non-slip and durable. Shop the Yoga with Lari Mindful Movement Mat now. Yoga blocks, straps and bolsters are optional and there to support your practice.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS?

Dress comfortably in clothing that won't hinder your practice.  For both males and females, tights and a vest are recommended or natural fibre fabrics.  Yoga is practiced bare feet.

SHOULD I CONSULT WITH MY DOCTOR PRIOR TO COMMENCING YOGA?

If you have any pre-existing injuries resulting from sport (etc.), have chronic ailments or have medical conditions/ diseases, please note that you are advised to seek a medical practitioner's advice before commencing with the practice of yoga.
